Functional skills course
Develop essential English and maths skills for everyday life, further learning and future employment at Century Training Academy in Great Yarmouth.

- Alternative provision for ages 13+
- Entry Level 1 to Level 2
Functional Skills help students develop the practical English and maths skills they need for everyday situations. From understanding written information and communicating clearly to managing money and working with measurements, the course focuses on useful skills that can be applied both in and outside the workplace.
At Century Training Academy, learning is tailored to each student’s individual needs and abilities. Students will progress at their own pace in a welcoming and supportive environment, helping them build confidence in subjects they may previously have found difficult.
What will you learn?
The course covers essential English & Maths skills, with the content adapted to each student’s current level and learning needs.
English skills
Students will develop their ability to:
- Read and understand everyday written information
- Communicate clearly through speaking and listening
- Write sentences and short pieces of text
- Use spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Complete forms and other everyday documents
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Build confidence communicating with others
Maths skills
Students will develop their ability to:
- Develop essential everyday maths skills
- Work with numbers, calculations and basic arithmetic
- Build confidence with fractions, decimals and percentages
- Learn how to use money, budgets and financial calculations
- Understand measurements, units and conversions
- Learn about shape, space and basic geometry
- Develop problem-solving and logical thinking skills
Qualifications and progression
Courses are available from Entry Level 1 through to Level 3, allowing students to work towards a level that reflects their current abilities and progress.
Developing Functional Skills can help students become more independent and prepare for their next step. This could include progressing to a higher-level course, continuing in education or building the skills and confidence needed for future employment.

Claire is our Functional Skills tutor, supporting learners with English and Maths in a friendly and encouraging environment. She works with each student at their own pace, helping them overcome barriers, build confidence and see what they are capable of achieving.
Cherie Meades
Cherie works alongside Claire in our Functional Skills sessions, offering learners extra support, guidance and encouragement. Her approachable nature helps students feel at ease while building their confidence and working towards their individual English and Maths goals.
